First thing is to take a deep breath and try and relax, especially the grip on your controller. Then take a note of the weapons and throwables you've been given. Next, as the round begins, always do the same thing. For me, it's sprint to the right side of the arena and hold an angle towards where the enemy start, then I listen and respond.
A Gulag match lasts 15 seconds, then goes into a 10 second overtime where if you can hold the flag in the center without dying, you win.
I've found that simply doing the same thing every time increases my win-rate to about 70%, which is good enough for me.
