Need tactical help with the mission "High Noon"? Can't deal with so many enemy subs with your Flight III 688? Watch me erase all these PLAN submarines trying to attack Guam...

Thumbnail: Han, already hit by a Mk48, was sinking beyond test depth and the other Mk48 also caught it.

-----

We can only take Flight III 688 here, and we do the usual: load MOSS decoy in tube 1. To ensure interception we also close to 20 km instead of the default 25 km.

We immediately went silent running and deployed the towed array, and we got quite a bit of traffic around us, but they seem to be civilian... Except for S4 Improved Kilo-class to southeast. We kept an eye on it as we kept searching for other subs, but the initial range estimate is... under 10km which is NOT good. We decided to go deep, and while the sonar conditions are favorable, dogleg a torpedo to east for about 8 km, then south.

The torpedo went east about 4km when we detected an active ping from the Kilo. It is technically not quite enough to detect us, but we're not taking any chances. We started the dogleg turn on the torpedo (4km is enough, but not optimal angle), and we also turned southwest. Not long after our torpedo's dogleg turn, we detected a launch transient from S4... He had counter-fired at least one torpedo. We noted the launch spot and made sure our torpedo was heading toward that spot. As it is quite close, we launched a MOSS decoy at east-southeast to make sure the torpedo heading this way will be pulled east instead.

This is also when we detected multiple subsurface contacts. We launched tubes 3 and 4 with Mk 48 ADCAPs toward east-southeast, while we tried to sink S4 with torpedo 2. We sank S4, even as we identified S6 as Han, S7 as Song, S8 as Ming, and S9 as Ming, and finally... S10 as Ming.

We had two torpedoes heading south, but one of them hit an underwater mountain. The other managed to kill S9 Ming. We launched more torpedoes, trying to avoid the underwater mountain, but not always succeeding.

One of the torpedoes, after a VERY long chase, finally caught S7 Song.

Another torpedo that went east managed to kill S10 Ming. That leaves S6 Han and S8 Ming

We launched another salvo of three torpedoes.

Torpedo 3 caught S8 Ming.

That leaves torpedo 2 and 4 to go after the Han. This is a nuclear boat, and it is quite maneuverable and decently fast, but with two torpedoes chasing it, it soon made a mistake and was caught by one torpedo. As it sank below test depth, hull already compromised, the other torpedo hit on the opposite side.

With six PLAN subs sunk, and no other subs in detection range, we disengaged. Those were indeed our mission objective, even though one of the Mings we identified was really a second Improved Kilo. Oh well.

-----

There were many different factors discussed, from how to position your submarine, to how to read sensor panels. How to set activation points with torpedo, and how to dogleg. How to conduct baffle attacks and how to consider approach angles to optimize sensors. How to locate enemies...
