Colin McRae Rally (1998) - Every PC Rally Game
Colin McRae Rally by Codemasters, 1998.
This is the first in the popular Colin McRae Rally (later DiRT) rally games. Licensing most of the current (at the time) WRC cars, and creating tracks based on many of the popular WRC locations, Codemasters were able to avoid the need to put any money down for the official WRC license! As this was early days of licensing, no one really stopped them doing it (later games in the series have much more restrictions applied upon them).
Handling-wise, your car moves as a block over the landscape (no separate suspension just yet!), but the gameplay is not a million miles from Sega Rally Championship, hence it being so popular at the time (and still being so, via the DiRT series).
Note: I've captured the game at it's maximum original resolution (800x600), rather than boosting the resolution with dgVoodoo2. I am using dgVoodoo2 to improve the graphic appearance (as trees/gravel effects look poor without the wrapper). I'm also using the fixes from https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Colin_McRae_Rally to get the game working; without them it'll crash to desktop every time you exit a race.
However, whilst the game runs at high refresh rates, it's capped internally at 111fps. Somewhere along the line a graphic glitch slips in with higher spec modern computers, where the camera skips/shifts for a frame, every second or two. It can be quite noticeable. I wasn't able to dial it out completely, unless I use the "Motion Smoothing" option in-game, but that reduces it from a buttery-smooth framerate to a jerky 30fps!
So yeah, it's playable on modern PCs, but glitchy!
