Insane (2000) - Every PC Rally Game
Insane by Invictus/Codemasters, 2000.
Insane, or 1nsane (as the numberplate in the game shows it) was an early game from off-road specialists Invictus. It proved pretty popular at the time.
One of the many varied cars (including an aircraft!) that can be unlocked in the game is this rally car, which seems to have the rear of a Toyota Celica but the front of a Subaru Impreza!
However, Insane is primarily an off-road racing game, by which I mean often trying to drive up near vertical climbs! It's not really a traditional rally title, which is why the car leaps and bobs about so much here. The handling is a bit vague, and can easily put you into a lazy, irretrievable spin.
There's some nice little touches though; the wildlife was a surprise, the whole car seems to have body flex on impacts, etc. Fences can be knocked apart. All things we take for granted these days, mind you! The game comes with 30 unique locations (including the Moon!) to race around in, which is rather generous!
Note: I'm using the Practice Off-Road Racing mode here, which comes with numerous checkpoints (which becomes a bit annoying on some tracks, "checkpoint, checkpoint, checkpoint!"), but the main focus on the game is multi-car races, thrashing across the landscape after flags, or checkpoints, etc.
