Colors Party ~LOST IN EATER~ Arcade Mode (Range + Yellow)
"Democratic Party? Republican Party? What the fuck are those?! I only know of the COLORS PARTY"
The Colors Party series of fighting games are perhaps particularly interesting in general. This game - a sequel of the original Colors Party, and to be followed by sequel Colors Party ~THE ROLL UP "END"~ (already covered in this channel) - is a collaboration between series creator Dream Illusory Valley/div332 and rusyun - possibly related to EXZAM - which made the EMBLEM OF RED fighting games.
The selectable attribute/"Infection color" system does not make a return here, instead utilizing a system similar to Persona 4 Arena's Persona system - some attacks (in particular, the Heavy attack button here) summon a partnered Color to attack in place of you. As far as my playtesting goes, I don't think you can force it to be disabled (like the Persona Break system), although some may have extended hurtboxes which in turn could be hit.
This is the first game in the series where long combos are the norm, and with an okay airdash and decent movement attributes, I would say the gameplay in practice is pretty great. The basic airdasher combo structure, where simple combos are eclipsed by jump cancel combos most of the time, and where longer combos are possible provided that you have the skills to do them, make playing the game fun.
Presentation-wise, It's alright, I guess. There is no proper voice acting, but the stages are neat, the music works quite well, and while I find how rusyun did the sprite work in the pants area weird, they are massive improvements over the original Colors Party. The visual aesthetic here is well done - the transition in between each round in Story Mode (which does not appear in THE ROLL UP ~END~) is one small change that I think adds a lot to what I initially thought of the visuals here.
Overall? A great doujin fighting game. Just as good as THE ROLL UP ~END~, and, well, nothing else to say here.
0:00 Story Mode
I don't really know any Japanese, and DeepL could only carry me so far, so I do apologize if any of the following is incorrect.
The story behind this is set after one of div332's previous works, that being the action game Lament Party. After the events that transpired in that game (personally never played that), a rumor goes out about how whoever would see any performance by the "Colors" would have their character color removed (akin to removing someone's magical powers). Around the same time, we find out that a mysterious individual - his color being that of bloody red.
After(?) Range and Puple encounter the bloody red individual (known in-game as Rady), Range is then sent by Gold to investigate this mess, which is played out in his story mode (shown here). It is revealed that Rady, who is in cahoots with White (Gold's partner color), is actually creating this eldritch horror creature called Lamentia, which is forcefully made from Shimo's power (Shimo is a friend of Puple who was presumably kidnapped beforehand). We then defeat Lamentia - a damage-sponge boss where the only optimal option is to continuously apply hitstun by taking advantage of jump cancelling and continuous attacks - and save Shimo, but Rady gets away.
A side note is that Reen appears as a bonus fight achievable after clearing the fourth stage under the condition that you don't lose a single round, other than that idk lol
23:13 Challenge Mode
You beat up what amounts to most of the cast in one-round deathmatches, culminating in a fight against CPU-only boss character Nikis(? Nix? Nyx? The first name shows up a lot, although it, just like many other characters' names here, could be a bad case of poor English). Unlike other entries, Nikis' CPU AI is not particularly threatening. This may be because the combos the CPU does in this game isn't of high damage(?), or maybe because I was cheesing the hell out of her boss fight, but her appearance in THE ROLL UP ~END~ was very threatening and I ended up cheesing her out to victory anyways, so honestly idk at this point lol
34:26 End screen
"Boss Battle" takes you to the final boss encountered in Story Mode, and as said final boss is already covered in Story Mode, this mode is not entered here. In other news, I am likely going to remake my video of me covering THE ROLL UP ~END~ with not only the story mode redone but also challenge mode covered and a proper description like this too (I am too lazy to add up on the original's description because I have numerous things to say about this sequel).
