Combat Guide For Beginners, For The Eternal Night - The Legend of Spyro
Many new and experienced players of TEN will often claim that the game is too hard; there is some truth to this. This is due to the gameplay mechanics and enemies but one factor that is important to the gameplay experience is combat. Eternal Night provides the tools (elements and dragon time) necessary for players to defeat enemies and progress throughout the game but only provides the most basic knowledge for the uses of these tools, not providing enough knowledge to fully utilize the elements. Since new players aren't fully knowledgeable of the extent of the abilities Spyro is given, they will have a more challenging time with the game. So it is up to the player's ability to know how to use the elements and combat fundamentals effectively. This is problematic because the game provides not much time in the beginning for the players to get used to the gameplay mechanics that are taught since they are thrown into battle with waves of enemies within a short time of starting the game. New players may become frustrated with their first experience with the game and blame it for having poor gameplay mechanics. Yes, the gameplay mechanics are unfavorable (yet they are manageable) but it shouldn't be the reason to be deterred from playing the game. There are other aspects of the game that make it enjoyable such as the story, music, and visual design. Knowing more than the very basics of combat may make the game more easier to handle and enjoyable for new players. So this video will go over helpful combat tips that beginners should know before playing the game.
Simple attack sequence with fire
1. activate dragon time and approach an enemy
2. stun enemy with flame breath
3. do a knock up attack then jump into a locked air combo
explanation: this is the most simple, safe and effective way to initiate an attack with less risk of getting hit by an enemy. Dragon time and flame breath reduces the risk of Spyro getting hit, giving an opportunity to attack an enemy. Dragon time is optional in this case if you are confident enough to do this method without it.
Glide evasion after air combo
1. do an air combo
2. dragon time (optional)
3. glide away from enemies once air combo is done
explanation: most new players will make the mistake of allowing Spyro to hover and fall back to the ground once an air combo is finished, making him vulnerable to enemy attack. The most safe option after an air combo is to glide away from the enemies. This method works the best with larger enemies.
Comet dash evasion
explanation: there is no specific procedure for this method but the key here is to use comet dash to evade enemies, similar to glide evasion but it is much faster. Comet dash evasion can be done after an air combo for example. It's useful to use after air combos on either small or large enemies.
Pushing enemies off platforms
1. knock up attack to get into a locked air combo
2. use Spyro's charge attack button
explanation: pushing an enemy off a platform kills it instantly. This is a great way to quickly defeat an enemy, especially ones with lots of health.
Dealing with spiders
1. knock up attack
2. wait for spider to collapse
3. tail strike
explanation: it is not necessary to attack a spider until its health runs out. Instead, one tail strike is enough to instantly kill it but make sure the spider collapses first.
Dealing with snails
1. use flame breath to stun
2. air combo the rider on top of the snail
explanation: the key here is to attack the rider on top of the snail, not the snail itself. Attacking the snail will not cause any damage.
Gem farming
There are two ways:
1. repeatedly perform locked air combos on enemies
2. jump into locked air combos repeatedly while using flame breath
explanation: Gem farming is a great way to gain health and magic back when there are no green and red crystals available.
Other considerations
1. It is more favorable if you don't stay in one spot when fighting enemies. The more time you stay in one spot, the more enemies that surround you increase, increasing the chance of stun lock and death. So make sure to move around most of the time in battle.
2. Dragon time is most useful in combat when approaching and evading enemies or paired with certain elements.
3. Not all large enemies can be knocked into the air with a knock up attack
4. You don't need to fully destroy red or green crystals to fully regain health and magic. Hitting the crystals 1-2 times should be enough.
