Comix Zone - No Continue Clear

oh, blimey, we just wanted this done and out the way, but at what cost?

this is Comix Zone, as played on the Mega Drive Mini (the most convenient and accurate version available to us, unless you really want to see the PAL version, eurgh) beaten without using any of the two (2) continues the game gives you. after several attempts that included the recordings getting all mucked up and one run that ended in death ~after the final boss was defeated~, this is the best we could do.

for now, a few miscellaneous notes. this is not a speed run or anything like that, just getting through the game without continuing. the play is of average quality, no fancy paper aeroplane nonsense, but there is some slight flexing (like taking a shot after beating the first two bosses) and attempts to get the fart animation to play out (it does during the first gravis fight and the death of kung-fung, but for the most part it looks like sketch is just teabagging, the rude git).

some notable goofs:
6:19 the tactic here is to let the boss set fire to the oil drum and then push it into her, then you can just chill while it kills her. sometimes, though, the drum doesn't light on fire- no particular reason, the game just didn't feel like it- so the strategy had to change accordingly.
12:15 here, what's supposed to happen is roadkill is meant to shock the mongoria enemies off the screen. what actually happens is roadkill clips through the panel wall and gets booted off the page by the final mongoria. luckily he's back and completely fine in the next panel (roadkill has set panels where he will reappear if he's ever knocked out).
17:50 ok, this is not even remotely optimal but it's ~incredibly~ funny and so this is the recording we kept. what's supposed to happen here is you lay the dynamite on the left side then make your way back to the right using the platforms. however. at the start on the right there's a kreep off-screen who can knock you into the landmines. so, this time we decided to ignore it and lay the dynamite... but the kreep being there makes the game choke on its own guts making ~every sprite disappear~ (this is consistent with real hardware, the final two pages have a lot of flickering) and so we fall on the landmines before the dynamite chain gets to them. luckily we recovered, but god that's funny.
21:00 i took these hits on purpose because if you land the mine just right, you'll kill both gravis and the door which is a big help, otherwise you lose a ton of health smashing the door in

never playing this game again.
