Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, an arcade conversion by Creative Materials for the Commodore 64 and released by US Gold in 1992.

“Street Fighter II brings the world’s best fighters together to find the undisputed champion. The time has come for you to flex those biceps and stand strong against the onslaught from the competition.”

Street Fighter II has appeared on just about every major platform of the time including 8 bit console and home computers. It didn't matter if the system was capable of reproducing the arcade game as the publishers at the time would milk their multi-platform license for all its worth and release something to bring in a few extra coins from systems that were on their way out at the time. A classic case of “even if you can, doesn't mean you should”.

The game was released on both disk and tape and upon loading there isn't much in the way of opening presentation and you are pretty much at the character select menu. In the options you can select difficulty, time on/off and music or sfx. I choose ryu as I find his special moves relatively easy to pull off.

Once into the game and you get past the “what the hell is this” feeling, you get to button mash your way to victory by beating your opponent. The game is stupid easy and doesnt pose much of a challenge if you can get the special moves out. The game is easier than it looks as well as I deliberately play badly in the hope of showing some of the opponent's special moves. There are no special bonus stages. There is a big emphasis on score during play but its all for nothing as the game has no high score screen nor a game over screen come to think of it.

All that said, were playing on a Commodore 64, it was never going to be pretty or arcade accurate. Yet after all the fighting games that did grace the c64, you do get the feeling that the game could have been done better by tailoring it to the system's strengths. Even the Spectrum version can be recognised as a Street Fighter II game and Final Fight on the C64 was a good effort, it just wasn't fun to play.

The Disk version is being played here. The Tape version has some notable differences. There is no map screen in between fights. If you run out of credits, the game ends and you have to rewind and load the tape from the beginning. This is a bigger problem in 2 player vs mode when you want to change character, again rewind and reload. The tape version also allows 1player vs cpu and its vs mode always takes place on guiles usa stage. On the disk vs mode is always 2 players only but you can choose where you fight.

At the end of the video I show ryu's stage missed out on the championship run as well as the continue screen. -
