Final Fight, an arcade conversion by Creative Materials for the Commodore 64 and published by US Gold in 1991.
“When Haggar became Mayor of Metro City, he thought he’d put his street fighting days behind him for good. No such luck - his delectable daughter, Jessica’s been kidnapped by the lawless Mad Gear Gang and Haggar must face his Final Fight!”
This is an odd one to look at. Another big arcade conversion to the little ole C64. It shouldn't work yet it somehow does … just about. But it doesn't mean its good.
The game opens up with the Intro and even though it’s missing any sounds or music, it loads pretty quickly even from tape and contains most of the original arcade intro. It doesn't look too bad either, yet distinctively C64. After that we are at the title where we can select one or two players. That's right, two players where other ports have failed!! So up to this point I think we can say the game has been fairly well presented. Much better than the rushed conversion of Street Fighter II a year later from the same group.
Once in game, the backgrounds and the character sprites look really well done, in that you can tell who they are meant to be based on the original arcade. Its once you start playing and get a few levels in things start to fall apart. The same enemies over and over again and it often seems like a constant stream even with only two enemies on screen at once.as the levels get longer and longer, so does the number of enemies and it starts to become a grind. Sure the original game was much the same not to this level. The arcade game can be completed in 30 mins where as we are here for nearly 2 hours.
The collision detection can feel way off at times, especially when playing with guy or Cody as they seem to have the same hit radius as Haggar. When performing special moves you need to move/jump away quickly on impact else the enemy is very likely to get an instant hit in. It is quite impressive that all the levels are represented here and the train and lift levels stand out from the rest. Defeating the Mad gear Boss leads to a very very short outro which leaves a sour taste after 2 hours of brawling. I would say the game is easy as you will lose energy,lives and credits quickly giving the enemy half a chance but there are health pickups to be found, just not so many in the long levels at the end.
All in all I think the conversion was a good attempt and the devs really wanted to get everything in, but in the end the game is not a lot of fun to play and feels grindy and I don't even think that's the fault of the limited resources of the c64. The Amiga version while a much better representation of the original game also suffers gameplay wise.
