I have previously long played the Spectrum version of this and it was a much better game. I have no idea which version was developed and released first but I imagine it was C64, Amstrad then Spectrum due to the added gfx details in that version. The Spectrum version is much better presented with additional music and many more rooms to visit.
The C64 version has fewer rooms and only 1 difficulty level meaning the family members are always in the same place. (similar to spectrum easy mode). Due to limited memory of the C64, the game map is split into 3 chunks so you are kind of limited in the order you tackle collecting the family members and the levels dont loop round so you have to backtrack your entire route to leave an area. The one aspect of this version that is unforgivable is the lack of music during the time trial when saving a family member. It makes it boring and feel a lot less polished than its Spectrum counterpart.
There are plenty of lives, credits and checkpoints in the game and as the game relies on trial and error, you will likely need them. Due to the momentum of the player character, you can easily slide into an enemy after a jump or jump slightly too early and not make a jump. You often need a running jump as well. It can make the game frustrating until you have the levels mapped out in your head or on paper.
Overall it's a nice game but clearly not the developers platform of choice when you look at the other 8 bit releases.
As a final note, avoid the 1581 release by Master as it fails to load Level 3 and forces you to spawn in the wrong room with a spike trap leading to a constant death loop you can't break out from. -
