Super Space Invaders, C64 conversion by The Kremlin and Published by Domark in 1991.
"In 1979, a strange phenomenon shook the World - the Invaders landed - ensuring that life would never be the same again. Now they're back ... with a vengeance !! Level after level of increasingly weird and hostile Invaders. Amazing multi-way scrolling playfields. Huge end of level mega monsters. Secret hidden levels for only the best to find. It's the sequel with no equal!"
Super Space invaders is one of by favorite games and I can enjoy any of the conversions on all the various platforms. The C64 version I bought and enjoyed back in the day and its only years later when you get to compare with the original and other conversions I realise that although its a good c64 game, its not a great conversion.
Sure it looks nice, fast and smooth gameplay and plays similar to the arcade original. But its missing most of the special weapons, the flying saucer is always the pyramid and there are no scrolling levels mentioned on the game box. The game also has very minimal sound effects. While this didn't bother me back when the game was new, comparing it against even the Spectrum version does the C64 version no favors. The Spectrum version is monocrome and the gameplay is much slower but the game is overall much more faithful to the original arcade game. Its gameplay even has you playing through every level and has an ending. The C64 version only requires you to play through 5 chosen stages and then just loops back to level 1.
Ignoring every other version, the C64 game isnt bad. You choose your route through five stages and battle different types of invaders on each stage. the game plays faster than other versions so you need to be careful when enemy projectiles rain down. After stage 1 and 3, you need to protect cows from being beamed up. Destroy enemy ships at the top of the screen for the best score. Be careful not to shoot the cows. You cant really die on these stages as your not being shot at and you are lower than the enemy ships. After stages 2, 4 and 5 you will face a boss battle. There are 6 different bosses in the game which I have shown in this video. Once the stage 5 boss is defeated, its back to the stage 1 and go round again.
When you see the Amstrad and Spectrum versions in action, I certainly believe the C64 version could have been better to at least match those versions feature wise. Also, being able to choose method of play would have been welcome as well. (Choice of 5 stages or all 12 stages). Ill just add that the intro screen lists various control options but the only one that seems to do anything is the pause button.
