Ghostbusters, developed by David Crane and published by Activision in 1984.
"Has anybody seen a ghost? Matter of fact yes they have! At this very moment hundreds of ghosts are making their way to the infamous spook central. Only you can save the world from a disaster of biblical proportions. To do this you must make it to the top of the Temple of Zuul. You can only do this when you have killed a large number of ghosts, made more money than you started with, and survived the constant dangers of the streets. So go and show em how you do it downtown!"
An amazing movie tie-in game from 1984. Really puts to shame what Ocean was doing in 1986 and the game would stand up even if it released much later in 1990. The game was developed for pretty much all the home systems of the time and all pretty much take advantage of the systems they are on and they all keep the same design and gameplay. The C64 version is perhaps the best of them all though with a banging soundtrack and speech!
In the longplay I let the karaoke style title screen play out. You can shout Ghostbusters at any time by pressing space bay but I tried to insert when the lyrics showed to, although I'm sure my timing is off. Once in game you start off with a bank loan and can choose your car and what to equip it with. Each car has different tradeoffs and costs. It's best to take all devices, bait and as many traps that will fit which will save you trips to the hq. The Bait is essential later in the game else you will lose loads of money if Marshmallow man crashes New York City.
Once the map opens up, it's time to wait for a ghost alert. When a building flashes red it's time to go Ghostbusting. When you arrive, set up your trap, catch the ghost and onto the next location. Once all traps are full, you need to go back to hq to empty the traps. All the while the city PK energy reading is steadily climbing. This will get quicker as you progress and the ghosts occupy the Zuul Temple. While driving around, you may spot a pink building which indicates PK energy and may be where the next ghost will be. A white building is a target for Marshmallow man. When he is about to appear, be quick with the bait to stop him crushing buildings.
Ghosts can also be caught while driving around. This stops them getting to ZuuL and helps keep the PK energy from rising too quickly allowing you more time to catch ghosts and make money. Don’t drive around too much though as it all adds to the travel time and the Ghost may be gone by the time you get to the destination. Eventually when the PK total hits 10000, You must go to the ZuuL temple and close the Portal. Marshmallow man blocks the entrance so timing is critical. You must get two of the three Ghostbusters inside to win the day.
Hopefully at the end of the game you have made more money than when you started, this allows you to take the money through to another day. I briefly show what you can buy with that money, a portable Laser Confinement System which means you only need one trap and automatically empty it after every use, a great time saver! The video ends with the Ghostbusters going about their day. A great game that I always enjoy loading.
