And so the troubleshooting on the 2040/4040 disk drive begins! I have another such drive, and so, I am going to swap chips from the suspect drive into the good drive and attempt to re-create the error(s) and this figure out which chip is effectively defective.

As the ROM chips were quite warm, I decided to start with them. There are three such chips all together on the lower part of the circuit board.

If you are thinking of doing anything like this yourself, make sure you are comfortable with a screwdriver and you have incredible patience. Chips in sockets can not be removed with haste, else pins get bent, perhaps broken and that never helped anybody!
