Finally got around to converting the power supply ... well, re-using the case.
The original supply was a 100V-to-9V transformer rated at 36VA delivering up to 4A.
I've replaced the transformer with a 230V-to-9V toroid rated at 50VA delivering up to 5.6A.

The power supplies for the PAL & NTSC VIC-20s were encased in epoxy, so basically waste if it doesn't suit your power system.
So I'm very happy with the VIC-1001's supply. It means that I can also use it on NTSC models with the same figure-8 style power plug.
