Progress!
The keyboard and case are cleaned, although some keys seem a bit unresponsive so will need to check the pads.
The VIC motherboard has been modernised: replaced the LM323 linear regulator, added a DC bypass, socketed UB9, replaced all the electrolytic capacitors, replaced all the cheap IC sockets with machined versions ...
... and it now works!
The only issue appeared to be a faulty 6502 - swapped it out and it came to life.
Next steps: replace the 6522s with modern CMOS equivalents (that quest to reduce heat/power), figure out what to do about the bridge rectifier, install a blue power LED, install switchable kernel
