No Damage Run played with no savestates.

Hello everyone! How are you? I hope you are all well and with good health ๐Ÿ˜ƒ.

My name is Velpa, and I am dedicated to completing retro videogames (from the first to the fourth generation) in No Damage conditions and without savestates, and this time I bring you Contra 3: The Alien Wars for the Super Nintendo, a game that we will break to its very essence in order to complete it without receiving a single hit. Are you ready?

๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ WHAT DOES "WITHOUT SAVESTATES" MEAN? ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ

It means that in case I receive a hit anywhere in the game, I do not return to the beginning of the level or the section in which I am, but to the beginning of the game. This condition greatly increases the difficulty of the game, but also adds a touch of magic and adrenaline to it that makes the experience very enjoyable.

๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ MY PERSONAL RULES ON THIS RUN ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ

-No quick kills on some bosses
.For some bosses, like Stage 2 boss, I wanted a longer fight showing more moves from the boss, in this specific case simply because to me it looks better. For the Stage 3 boss, it's because I feel this approach depends less on luck and it's 100% skill-reliant (there's a lot more going on there than it looks by the way! Specially the first of the two fights). Same goes for Stage 1 boss and maybe other fights I am forgetting now.
-No powerups
.This includes the invencibility items (the ones with the B letter and blue-decorated) and all the items that float throughout the levels. Oh, also enemy drops.
-No bombs
.Not a single one, not the one that comes "by default" either. This made the fight against Gomeramos King (the one with four nests two above and two below in Stage 6) particularly difficult, but I found a couple of tricks that helped me (characters limit won't allow me to fully explain here, but feel free to contact me for any questions).
-No rapid weapon switch

๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ MY STYLE WHEN DOING NO DAMAGE RUNS ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ

Personally, I love a No Damage Run that is full of style and aggressiveness. With style, I mean things like joking with enemies/bosses (maybe something like trying different combos that might do less damage and make the fight longer, and maybe involves a higher risk, but is funny and entertaining to watch), and with aggressiveness, I mean things like getting myself into positions where it's very easy for me to take damage (maybe something like fighting in the middle of the room instead of cornering myself and making use of the fact that enemies can't attack past a certain point, what is more technically known as the player being out of bounds for the enemy range of attack). I only play safe mostly when it's absolutely necessary (to avoid bad RNG/randomness near the end of a run, for example). So if you love these qualities as much as I do, then it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll have a lot of fun watching this run and the other ones that I have uploaded to my channel! ๐Ÿ˜Š .

๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ COMMENTS ON THIS RUN ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ๐ŸŽฎ

The introduction isn't actually part of the run itself. I mean, while I did watch the opening cutscene in some of my attempts, I didn't in all of them, so I edited the video afterwards.

Also, super important I was almost forgetting!! I used RetroArch instead of Snes9x (that's usually my preferred choice for SNES games) because of the Gomeramos King fight. The full explanation is too long to include here, but in short, there's a feature in RetroArch called Frame Run-ahead, which allows you to reduce input lag, making it closer to a console experience. There IS still DISPLAY LAG, so that makes this fight still fairly hard, but it's at least more doable than in Snes9x. Those ~33ms extra DO count in this specific fight (in most games it doesn't make that much of a difference). So if you are attempting the same in other emulators, be aware that it's going to be most certainly more difficult.
