You can see that I've got most of the shop bought out when I pick my perks at the beginning. This is a challenging game, and I'll do everything I have to to survive, so I picked the 2+ extra hit points and the not degrading your weapon from powered up phase when you get hit.
I played well up until the final couple of stages - I don't have tons of practice with them, and I have a hard time outrunning the acid in the final stage. Fortunately I had enough hit points and lives to last.
If I had a choice, I'd play this game with nothing but the Crush and Spread Guns, but it wouldn't be classic Contra if there weren't power up pods floating around. When I was down to my final hit point on each life, I'd usually use my power attack, which takes one level of your weapon's strength to do a super move. Better to use that than just die and lose it anyway.
I totally didn't mean to pick up any other weapons, but the Homing Missiles served me well when I'd accidentally pick them up.
I've loved Contra since I was a kid. Shattered Soldier is still my favorite. I used to play C:SS with my girlfriend, later wife, and ex-wife. I was always Bill, she was always Lucia, and we were a great team.
The outstanding Steve Blum voices Bill Rizer in this game, much like he did Master Contra in Neo Contra, and I thought that was an awesome touch. He's got a perfect voice for Bill.
