Welcome to a brand new series called Backlog Battle Bits! I'm hoping that this series will be a way for me to express my thoughts, feelings, and ideas about video games that will hopefully complement the Backlog Battle Podcast and the Try Play series. I hope that you enjoy this first episode of many!

Today's Bits will be all about cooking games, a genre that seems to be on the rise lately. I feel that it's a genre that seems so banal and boring that people don't necessarily equate it to the action game genre. In this video, I mention two games - Battle Chef Brigade and Overcooked - that exemplify the idea that cooking games are a legitimate sub-genre in action, with roots inspired by cooking competition shows like Chopped, Cutthroat Kitchen, and Iron Chef.

Battle Chef Brigade, developed by Trinket Studios and published by Adult Swim Games, wears its inspirations on its sleeve - it's a cooking game with a deep single player story, chronicling the rise of two chefs as they aim to become a member of an army of fighter chefs that protect the land of Victusia from monsters. Most notably of all is the game's gameplay's similarities with the show Iron Chef: you are assigned a secret ingredient, determine what flavor profiles are suitable for your judges, and deliver the food in time for the judges to taste your dish. The main difference of course is that you'll also be asked to hunt your food yourself! The game is available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and - at some point in the future - PS4!

Overcooked is one of my favorite co-op games of all time. The game is developed by Ghost Town Games and published by Team17. While the game can be played solo, it's certainly encouraged that you play it with other people. It's too bad that it's not online capable. That said, it's a more fast paced and frenetic game than Battle Chef Brigade, with lots of fantastical challenges that really sets this game apart from other games in the genre.

Are there any other cooking games that I might have missed or you've played that I might like or try? Leave a comment below if you do!
