With a name like "Copy Kitty", you probably wouldn't expect much, but you'd probably be surprised that it's one of the most criminally overlooked indie titles in recent years, and certainly one of the most overlooked among Steam's tens of thousands of available titles. Imagine if a little Alien Soldier, Kirby 64, Mega Man X, and Contra got thrown into a blender and it barfed out pre-rendered models with intense epilepsy-inducing particle effects, an awesome and pumping soundtrack, a ridiculous amount of content, and a modest price tag...oh, and two playable protagonists (a female alien cat and a male ant genius) with distinct playstyles. Published by Degica (Koihime Enbu PC, Mushihimesama PC, etc.) and being Nuclear Strawberries' debut game, this game is a meticulously crafted love letter to the many action games of yore, featuring anecdotes from the creator for virtually every single facet of the game, from inspirations to designs and music (EX: inspirations steam from Dreamcast's "Chu Chu Rocket", "Famitracker", etc.).

Copy Kitty stars Boki and Savant, two alien "Entanmas" (creatures with special innate magical powers) working towards a better future by fighting a group known as "The Cybers" (Entanmas that were captured, brainwashed and turned into living weapons) masterminded by a mysterious force. Players can access up to three different weapons at once and combine them to form almost 200 different weapons and weapon combinations, many packing loads of destructive power and dazzling effects. Just as interesting as the weapon combinations are the physics that the game adheres to; water weapons react differently when it's raining or you're underwater, as does wind, fire, electricity, etc., and the large variety of enemies and bosses have different strategies and weaknesses, not to mention partially destructible levels. Players can also kick (destroys some objects and terrain as well as deflect bullets) and roll to dodge bullets. The game features over 100 mini-stages that are crammed with foes that need to be destroyed, level bosses, mid bosses and world bosses. If that wasn't enough, there's a level editor, modifiers, an endless mode, art gallery, sound test, over 50 achievements, many graphics and display options, and pretty tight play control. Even with it being in "Early Access", it is nearly complete and has the potential to be ever-expandable.

This game has been in development for over seven years and while it's not a "perfect" game, there aren't too many games in the indie sector as inspired, polished and fully-realized as Copy Kitty. You owe it to yourself to try this game if you like action games or to recommend it to a friend who does. This is a video showing the first few worlds. The game is so intense that there are a few occasional dips in framerate, but nothing serious. I wanted to decently illustrate the game's range of effects, environments, etc. You can get this game at:

or

Enjoy. And YouTube slowed down the framerate about 30 minutes in... don't know why.
