Fight'N Rage Game Sample - PC/Indie
Gameplay starts at 4:35
Fight'N Rage is a glorious throwback to a bygone era where 2D beat-em-ups were all the rage. Ever play Final Fight? Streets of Rage?? Double Dragon??? River City Ransom????? If you haven't, you really missed out, but the "devs" (read: one guy) at Seba Games Dev did more than create an homage; this game incorporates some of the best elements from the 80s and 90s beat-em-ups (planes, item pick-ups, emergency specials, score bonuses and modifiers, etc.) and splices them with features from various fighting games (Throw Escapes, Air Recovery, Wall Jumps, Just Frame / Parry from Street Fighter III, etc.), a classic unlocking system where everything is bought with in-game currency earned through Arcade Mode (and there is a wealth of things to unlock... dozens of costumes, playable enemy characters, extra modes, features, tips, etc.) and multiple routes through the game which can lead to one of 56 (mostly subtle) different endings based on character pairs. The best part is that the game is challenging but fair, can be cleared in one credit regardless of character, difficulty, or enemy wave, and the game has precise controls. The original working title for the game was codenamed "F.A.R.M" (Fight Against the Revenge of the Mutants). There are tons of pop culture references to other games in here too. The game took three and a half years to develop.
While these games were everywhere in arcades back in the day, the current gaming landscape is almost devoid of such titles, and Fight'N Rage's overall polish makes this a gem among gems for starved fans of the genre. Incredibly, only two people were primarily involved in the game's creation: Sebastián Garcia created the game and Gonzalo Varela provided the music. The game uses three buttons (Attack, Jump, and Special) and has your three stereo-typical characters, the all-rounder, the agile but weak character, and the strongman (who is OP by the way). Your goal is to save humans from a mutant rampage led by a vicious dictator known as "The Boss" before all of humanity is enslaved. Yes, there's a bit of dialogue here and there, but the plot is about as basic as it gets... not that it it matters much for this type of game. The graphics are really vibrant with a few adjustable settings, the music is awesome and the game supports 3-player local co-op... nothing yet on net play. I wish some of the stages were swapped around though... one of the best levels that takes place on a raft is not part of the route to the better endings. Initial playthroughs are a little long for this type of game too.
Anyway, you can't do much better than this for a modern-retro 2D beat-em-up. Send lots of respect "Seba Games Dev" way and if you like this, try games like Streets of Rage Remake, Guardian Heroes (Saturn, Xbox Live Marketplace) and Golden Axe Myth, to name a few. This game can be purchased at:
