Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is a platformer in which the player primarily controls the titular character Crash or his sister Coco, who are tasked with saving the multiverse from domination by Doctors Neo Cortex and Nefarious Tropy. Game levels progress and progress along a linear map that is divided into ten "Dimensions", each with their own theme. From this map, players can switch between controlling Crash or Coco at any time. The game can be played in two different styles, which can be selected before the start of a new game and can be changed at any time in the options menu. The default playstyle is "Modern", where the player will always return to the latest checkpoint when the player character dies. In another style of play, "Retro", the player is awarded a certain number of lives (represented by the floating head of the current character), more of which can be collected in levels. If a player's last life is lost, the level will be restarted from the beginning. Neither difficulty nor reward progress is affected by different play styles.

Gameplay takes place from a third-person perspective, with some parts involving the player character running towards the camera or moving in side-scrolling mode. Crash and Coco's basic maneuvers include jumps and double jumps, spin attacks, crawls, glides, and slams into the ground. They can also grind, hang, and jump across rails, as well as run along designated walls. Scattered throughout the levels are a wide variety of chests that serve different functions. Chests generally contain Wumpa Fruits, which grant extra lives if 100 are collected in Retro playstyle. The other chest contains an Aku Aku mask, which protects the player character from contact with an enemy or danger. Collecting three Aku Aku masks in a row will give the player character temporary invincibility from all dangers except falling into the abyss. When invincible, the player character can automatically kill enemies and destroy chests within a certain radius. Within each level there is a "Bonus" area which is accessed via a platform with a yellow question mark. Each Bonus area consists of a sequence of short side-scrolling puzzles in which the player must solve all the chests within the area. Dying in the Bonus area will not cost a life in the Retro style of play, and will result in the player character reappearing next to the Bonus platform in that level.
