In a Pogo Pandemonium stage, for the Gem Challenge, rather than keeping your score the highest, it makes you drop it down to 0 before any of the opponents can. The catch is that you'll always start with more points to lose compared to said opponents.

In Pogo Painter's Crystal Challenge, Poison Mushrooms will randomly grow in from different squares on the field. These will only stun the opponents, but if you land on them, it's an instant loss.

However, you can also cheese against the mushrooms, too. They will display a ring before they actually sprout from the ground. If you can land on it between the ring and the mushroom, then the mushroom won't come out and you'll be safe.
