As the new fish, you'll have to choose which gang to join, then raise your rank by doing favors for inmates. But just getting around the prison can be a dangerous proposition. Choose you path carefully between locations and engage in turn-based, party combat. Scavenge for resources to upgrade your cell and craft a variety of weapons, tools, and consumables. But keep your contraband hidden or face the guards' wrath. Even death is no escape, as your consciousness will get uploaded to a clone to continue your sentence.
