Creative Labs Soundblaster Pro 2.0 playing Sim City 2000 music (OPL3-FM)
The Soundblaster Pro 2.0 was a true milestone iin the history of PC sound. It features the Yamaha YMF262 OPL3-FM for sound synthesis, the successor of the YM3812 that became famous on the Adlib and the Soundblaster 1 & 2. With the SoundBlaster Pro it was possible to play 2 chanel stereo sound and music. The Soundblaster 2.0 became the standard, you can hardly find a game or a soundcard that doesn't offer SB-Pro compatibility. But why 2.0? The SB Pro 1.0 was equipped with two YM3812 OPL2 ICs, but this combination wasn't really supported by the game industry and so these cards are just a few and very hard to find. The Soundblaster Pro 2 was my first soundcard so it has a special value for me. The card is perfect for older ISA systems as it is non-PNP and you can easily set the values by jumpers. No drivers needed.
I chose Maxis' Sim City 2000 for the demonstration of this card, because these are my memories - i played this combo on my 14" CRT for hours and hours back the days - awesome game!
Testbench: 100mhz intel Pentium, MS-DOS 6.21, S3 Trio VGA. Recorded directly out of the game, no DOS-Box or emulation, real noise.
