Yamaha-FM vs. CMI-FM (Adlib OPL2 mode): Inoid - The Whale's Voyage
Hello friends,
with todays video we continue our series of fm-comparisons between the genuine Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 and the many clones.
This time we have the yamaha-fm vs. cmi-fm in OPL2 mode.
We start this projekt because of the question how noticable the differences are - a question that is heavily discussed in the community. But attention please: This is just a simple recording complarison, the two records are cut in peaces with audacity and arranged so that we have a change from one to the other card every 10 secconds. We have no measurements, funky oscyloscope charts or any else sientific stuff like that. So just let your ears and your mind decide if you like the clones or not, if you think they were well-made or not. Feel free to leave a comment down below.
Record setup:
Siemens Intel 440BX Slot I ATX mainboard, Pentium II 233 downclocked at 133mhz. MS-DOS 6.2.
For this record i uesd setmul to diable the internal and external CPU cache to avoid possible speed issues with the Whales Voyage Jukebox on DOS.
The Yamaha reference card of choice:
Aztech MMSN-837 ISA soundcard (branded as Packard-Bell Sound16A here), recorded via analog line-out (This is the reference-card for our comparisons because of the genuine Yamaha OPL3 YMF262 FM and the very good, low noise output signal quality. The YMF262 is fukky backward compatible to the Yamaha YM3812 OPL2 and therefore should sound the same.
The CMl-FM competitor:
SoundPro HTF1869V+ is a rebranded CMI8330 based PnP ISA soundcard, recorded via analog line-out.
The recorder:
Acer Notebook running windows 7, recorded via Behringer UCA202 external USB Soundcard using the Line-Input. Software: Audacity.
The sound source:
Inoid - a track from the DOS-Game Whales Voyage, composed by Hannes Seifert.
