β οΈ Important! Cronos: The New Dawn runs on Unreal Engine 5, and on low-end GPUs it defaults to DX11 mode - at least on RX 570, RX 580, and GTX 1060. The problem is that DX11 seems to have many issues and probably wasnβt considered a fully supported option by the developers. In DX11 you can encounter missing or transparent textures, flickering, CPU-limited performance, stutters at startup due to lack of shader precompilation, and terrible lighting. In DX12, none of these problems exist. Shader precompilation is present, which reduces stuttering. To force DX12, simply add -dx12 to your Steam launch options.
There's also a separate Very Low preset, which is quite different from the regular Low settings. This preset makes the game playable even on GPUs below the minimum requirements (RX 5700, GTX 1080). Itβs very similar to the popular UE5 optimization mods you can find on Nexus - but this time itβs built-in by the developers themselves.
Aside from some lower-quality textures, the game still looks decent and runs surprisingly well even on 4GB VRAM, delivering 60+ FPS on RX 570. Lighting issues or missing/transparent textures from DX11 are gone.
β οΈ Be careful: if you use Custom settings and manually set everything to minimum, it will actually equal the Low preset - which is unplayable on 4GB VRAM with much lower FPS.
For this video, I made a first run on RX 570 4GB and recorded a long gameplay session on a single preset to check stability.
P.S: A big thanks to Bloober Team for providing the game key.
