For this third cross narrative scene, I knew that I wanted to create a departure from the first two videos which have been primarily focused on larger than life characters. For this scene, I crafted a narrative between two legends in their rights: Joel from The Last of Us, originally performed by Troy Baker, and Negan from The Walking Dead who was originally performed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Following my research, I quickly realized the similarities between these two characters but also their stark contrasts. I knew the key to creating two completely different voices was their personalities rather than their vocal tones. As I wrote the script, I searched for moments to allow these characters to breathe and inhabit the writing.
As I began recording this video, I had to tether my expectations and research that told me what these characters sound like with my interpretation of these two men and the situation they are in. This helped me bring to light the tense nature of Joel while also shining the spotlight on Negan’s need to alleviate said tension while also being hell-bent on survival. I found myself consistently restarting the process when my voice struggled to distinguish itself between the two characters. Through some vocal texturing techniques I have learned, I was finally able to finish the recording and I am very proud of the final.
The editing process for this video was incredibly challenging. Finding ways to establish environmental tensions while also creating a sense of security was something that had me second-guessing every choice and was a big factor in the overall project. I also had to find sounds that not only stood out in the scene but also meshed into the environment to create the perfect atmosphere to strike a balance between these two landmarks of entertainment.
I am humbled and beyond excited to present you all with my third Cross Narrative Scene: Joel teams up with Negan to restore the power to the camp.
