A lot of dangerous fish to battle down here in this trench. Some of them might not be actively trying to hunt you down.
If I had played this run of the game on Advance Mode, I would've been given a Score Multiplier that can be raised by having the Super Tatsujin smart bomb come in contact with an enemy. This can even be boosted by finishing off a boss with this attack.

Act II's boss is the Ghastokiza. You mainly wanna focus your attacks on its face in the front, and the tail fin from behind, but watch out for the multiple shots it has, such as from its mouth, right on its tail fin, and the cannon on its back.
Also remember that energy isn't just gathered from destroying targets. It's slowly built up as you pelt tougher enemies with your own shots.
