D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die - Amanda Shop Branch
D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die (JAPANESE, Romanji, "Literal Translation") is episodic adventure game developed by Access Games and published by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One, and was later ported by Playism for the Home PC. It originally released in North America on September 19, 2014.
D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die was the final game developed by Hidetaka Suehiro for Access Games, the company he co-founded. He left the company in October 2016 due to health reasons.
Suehiro's original concept for D4 centered around the Xbox One Kinect Camera accessory. The game required players to use simple gestures and voice commands to interact with the game. Microsoft was impressed with the game as it was a step above most Kinnect titles and even featured it in their press events.
However, when development was near completion, Microsoft made the decision to remove the Kinect camera from the console bundle in an attempt to bolster console sales as a way to make it more affordable. As a result, anyone who purchased an Xbox One could no longer play D4 as intended since it relied heavily on the Kinect. This greatly affected the game's sales on the platform.
The combination of poor sales and Hidetaka Suehiro's departure led to the game remaining unfinished, with the cancellation of its second season. Despite fans' hopes that Suehiro would continue working on the game in the future, he has stated that it is impossible and advised them to forget about it. Nevertheless, Suehiro did include a reference to the series in Deadly Premonition 2, subtly mentioning the main character of D4 being unable to complete his investigation due to funding cuts.
While the game remains incomplete, it is still an interesting title worth playing.
The games soundtrack was composed by Tomomi Teratani, Yuji Takenouchi, Rio Okano, and Atsushi Yamaji.
