Dark Souls 3 - PVP - Friede's Great Scythe (SL123) [v1]
133I never thought I would be using this weapon, I really dislike how popular and edgy it is, not unlike some of the weapons released with the Ringed City DLC. However, it's finally time! A shift in the PVP meta toward strength builds and hyper armor means it' time to review Friedes Scythe and see how it fits in.
1. It does have innate shield piercing, like all scythes, however most players recognized this and simply traded to a weapon with a favorable matchup, rather than trying to use their shield.
2. Speaking of favorable matchups, Friedes Scythe didn't have many, but in particular, it struggled very badly with hyperarmor mid-speed weapons that could outrange it. For example: Splitleaf, Black Knight Glaive, Gael's Greatsword, and Onyx Blade (to name a few). That's not to say that it did well against curved swords, which could interupt it's slow R1's.
3. And that's sort of the unique attribute of Friede's Great Scythe, it has it's own R1 animation not shared by other Scythe's. The R1 has pretty good range, a stun, and can easily follow into a third swip for potentially 800 damage, but to just get a clean shot off is so difficult, because your opponent will choose to outrange, interupt, poise, or run away and heal.
4. If an opponent is playing forcefully in close range, its actually better to switch to the R2, which comes out quickly and deals high damage. The 2-hand rolling attack and the 1-hand dash attack aren't bad either. In the end though, everything is too slow for chasing, which is why you are forced to play passively with Friede's Scythe.
5. As a last comment, I would like to mention that I think this weapon should receive minor hyper armor to it's neutral R1 attack, and this would allow it to compete consistently against light weapons like straight swords and curved swords
