DarkLight Dungeon (2010) (PC) (ZoellerSoft)
20It's certainly not every day that a new PC first-person dungeon crawler comes out, so the recent release of DarkLight Dungeon from one-man indie developer ZoellerSoft is exciting news.
DarkLight Dungeon is a single-character game with turn-based combat and a variety of races and skills to choose from. The game is in full polygonal 3D (max resolution is a whopping 1680*1050) but utilizes the classical step-based movement of traditional first-person PC RPGs. While the presentation is functional at best, the overall atmosphere is really good and effectively communicates the sense of danger, mystery and exciting exploration which characterize all good dungeon crawlers. As for the amount of content, there are supposedly 17 floors in the dungeon as well as 22 clearly differentiated areas filled with monsters, traps, puzzles and more than 200 unique items to discover. The game also encourages thoughtful, tactical gameplay since there's a penalty system for dying (and there's no cheap "save/reload" way of cheating it, either).
If you're even remotely interested in this type of game I imagine ZoellerSoft could use all the support it can get, and purchasing DarkLight Dungeon (for the entirely reasonable price of 9,95$) will also make a sequel all the more likely. The developer Jesse Zoeller already has plenty of ideas for how to improve and expand the game engine in terms of overall gameplay, character development as well as graphics, so if enough old school RPG fans put their money where their mouth is this could be the beginning of something very nice, indeed...
