Ever since Civ 5 was released in September of last year I've been thinking about getting a copy of the latest installment in Sid Meier's epic strategy series just to see what the fuss is all about, and when UK-based downloadable service Get Games had a fairly generous sale this week I finally got around to purchasing the game.

After my first brief attempt at playing Civ 5, I'm certainly glad that I bought the game. The massively revamped UI (which may look awkward at first but works better than you'd think) as well as the many subtle and not so subtle changes made to the gameplay really make a huge difference - much more so than I had anticipated. It's kind of hard to explain, but by bringing the most immediately relevant information to the forefront, it all feels that much more manageable and structured. Rather than drowning the player in information and indecipherable feedback, the game does a good job of pointing out what matters. Smaller things like the fact that rival leaders are nicely animated and the voice acting have been recorded in the actual language of the civilization in question also add quite a lot to the overall experience, as does the excellent soundtrack and Leonard Nimoy's theatrical tech tree narration. I'm definitely looking forward to exploring the game more thoroughly.
