Dazzler, 1982 Century Electronics CVS
Okay game from the British company Century Electronics, who created a lot of their games to run on cassettes in the Century Video System. Most of their games are pretty bad, and this one is better. Even with the tinny, broken and repetitive music and technical flaws on the 2nd of the 2 types of stages, it's still at least somewhat playable. The first of the stages is reminiscent of the old Konami game TURTLES. Here you guide a dude simplay known as OUR HERO through a maze, opening doors (you need no key) to collect bananas to feed an ape that will appear in another of the doors. Thwarting your efforts to feed every ape that appears are the EVIL VULTURES that are lethal to touch. Either try to anticipate where they're going and take a different route (they can't backtrack unless they run into a dead end, each other or a bonus prize that occasionally appears), or you can drop a snake (you collect one for each ape you feed). The snake, when touched by a vulture, will fight with it for a while. You can pass through it at this point but the other vultures cannot. The vulture will eventually kill the snake and move about the maze again. 2 of the doors have an extra vulture and a tone will play, so get away quickly when you hear it. Feed all apes and you go to the Donkey Kong-like level. Here you jump across to different platforms or climb ladders. The vultures are back and although they are out of range in terms of touching you, they still drop eggs (they look like chocolate muffins) on you from above to kill you. You have no defense so go only when it's safe. Watch for gaps in the platforms you must jump over, and-- this is really important-- don't allow the technical failings claim you! If you don't jump across a platform just right you can accidentally fall THROUGH it! Falling off the structure is fatal, and your goal is simply to make it to the top-right where the ape is caged to free him. You then repeat the 2 stages, but they maze and structure will have different layouts and the enemies will maybe be faster or drop more/faster eggs. The 2 stages represent 1 level on the list of levels in the top right of the screen-- pass 8 sets and you'll see a cutscene of you and the ape spit-roasting a vulture! From that point on the TURTLES-like level will be BATSHIT fast!! If you're able to look past the poor music and technical flaws you may find something to like about this game (I did, especially back in the day). Hope you enjoyed the World Series, folks (Boston won in 5; I figured they'd either sweep or win in 5), and Happy Halloween!!!
