The explanation for the two possibilities of the plot probably isn't too clear. I can only assume based on what's in the game, but they're basically as such: 1) The ship is an orbital research station and you're just a test subject put into a "ship overrun by zombies" scenario to test either a zombie virus, a super-soldier serum, or both. 2) The ship is a ship and you're a soldier who found themselves on it during a zombie plague created by the science team, who created it as part of super-soldier serum development.
The comparison to another game in another genre that nobody watching these ever played probably doesn't help much, but I tried.
