Dead Space Part 34: The End
So, as we finish up this game it is time for my usual rant about my overall thoughts on the game as a whole which, in case you were wondering, might have some spoilers so, if you haven’t seen/played up to this point, I would suggest not reading this. Alright, with that out of the way Let’s go. So overall, I really enjoyed this game; It was a really nice blend of horror with some survival elements. The story was really good and interesting with some fairly interesting characters. I wish they gave us more time with Kendra and Hammond to let us learn more about them (Maybe Isaac is new to this ship and hasn’t worked with them and, through some conversations, learns a little bit more about their past) however, I do understand why we don’t get said interaction (The fact that everyone around us is either dead/dying/being turned into flesh-eating monster etc.) and those conversations might’ve ruined the isolation the player feels throughout the game. You rarely see another being within the game that isn’t trying to rip off your face and, aside from the interactions in which other characters tell you what to repair/where to go, you are alone with these horrifying monsters. So I understand why they don’t go into detail about the few other characters’ past but I was horribly confused about the twist ending because I missed a line or two (Kendra briefly mentions that her department has been looking for the Marker/Home world of the Necromorphs but I missed it which is why I didn’t really get her motivation behind said betrayal) and felt like Hammond just disappeared from the game for so long that I think I forgot his name. Again, that probably was to help the player feel isolated and with some of the surprise twists the game has (with Hammond’s death, Kendra’s betrayal, Kyne’s hallucinations/Your own hallucinations etc.) but it would’ve been nice (maybe they were hiding in some written log that I didn’t read; who knows?).
The Gameplay was really nice (when my controller was working *Stares angrily at Controller as if trying to make it feel bad*) and the shooting felt really comfortable. Fighting in this game is a little different than most because of how the enemies are design; instead of just trying to shoot them in the face, you have to aim for their limbs which adds this different playstyle. For the most part, I thought it was enjoyable (as enjoyable as having terrifying monsters run at you, ready to maul you apart) but I don’t all the weapons are well suited for this different kind of combat. I don’t know how effective it is to shoot weapons like the Flamethrower or assault rifle over the starting pistol since the game makes the player conserve ammo or, in my case, make you spend money on buying more ammo because you are shooting like a wild animal. There were a couple of weapons that I felt like I would waste too much ammo or just put a strain on my wallet because I would be constantly buying more ammo. There is also the idea of upgrading all the weapons; Still not sure if it would be possible to do but I ended up saving my nodes to fully upgrade only two weapons (working on a third). Speaking of Upgrades, that system was fairly interesting to use; Using the Nodes to either open supply rooms that would contain lots of goodies vs investing in your weapons and armor. Not sure how I feel about them empty nodes that you have to fill in order to get an actual upgrade; Part of me thinks that it’s a good idea which forces the player to either hold onto these nodes till they are sure what they want or makes the player more invested with the weapon/armor. The other half of me is crying over all the wasted nodes that were placed in weapons and not used to open the supply rooms. Either way, it was definitely fun to mess around with even though I know I’ll get yelled at for not going the most optimal pathways.
So yeah overall, I really enjoyed this game and can’t wait to get into the sequel which I’ve only played partially so, seeing the end of the game will be a lot of fun (and seeing how much of the game I do know/ remembering where the jumps scares are going to com from).
