DEATHLOOP GAMEPLAY - THE ULTIMATE PREVIEW
Imagine you’re an assassin and it’s your job to pull off an impossible hit. That’s the premise behind Deathloop. But here’s the catch. You’ve got unlimited lives. In this world, every failure, every death, is an opportunity to try again. To experiment with new weapons and new supernatural abilities, and to discover new secrets and new passageways. Die enough, or rather, try enough, and you’ll eventually be able to crack the code of one very peculiar island, and one massive assassination contract. While Deathloop was delayed until September 14th, we still know a ton about the game. If you want the TLDR version, this could be a game of the year contender. But if you like first person shooters, games that let you play however you want, and if you like exploring expertly and meticulously hand-crafted worlds, then stick around as I cover everything - and I mean everything - we know, about Deathloop.

But first, here’s a fun fact for you. As of now, only 3% of my viewers are subscribed. That blows my mind. The next time I publish a preview for say, Far Cry 6, Ratchet and Clank, or any other big game, 97% of my viewers won’t get notified. I don’t post videos very often but when I do, I make sure they’re worth your time. So if you like highly researched, highly edited previews just like this one, hit that subscribe button below. And with that out of the way, let’s look at everything we know, about Deathloop.

THE LOOP

It’s hard to talk about the world, the characters, and the gameplay of Deathloop without first explaining its premise. The game takes place within a time loop that has you, a character named Colt, waking up morning after morning after morning on the beach of an island called Blackreef. If you want to break this timeloop, and you do, you have until midnight to kill 8 targets, called visionaries. Visionaries are the leaders of Blackreef - or at the very least, they’re the brilliant minds that cooked up this timeloop thing - and if you fail to kill just one visionary, or get killed yourself, the loop resets, placing you back on that same beach with the same goal, and the same splitting headache. It sounds simple, but there’s one major problem. Each visionary is on a set schedule, and without your intervention, there’s literally not enough time in the day to simply find and assassinate each visionary one by one. As such, you’ve got to manipulate their schedules by triggering certain events, or preventing others. This will cause, for example, two targets to change their plans and hence, appear in the same place at the same time, allowing you to save precious time by eliminating them simultaneously. It’s what the developers call a “Murder Puzzle.” There are many pieces to this puzzle, and discovering they fit together is completely non linear. You have to scope out your targets, uncover mysteries, and you can do this in any order, and at any pace that you choose. But while the exploration phase of Deathloop is completely non linear, this murder puzzle has only one solution. That is to say, you must kill all 8 targets in just the right order. But again, the game lets you discover this solution, more or less, on your own. As described by Game Director Dinga Bakaba in an article in Game Informer "If we're talking about learning everything there is to know about breaking the time loop, it is very open-ended. Activities can be completed in any order, and every situation can be approached in a variety of ways.” But he then went on to say that “There is only one solution for how to get out of the time loop. But first, you need to find it. Then you need to perform it. And that isn't necessarily the easiest thing to accomplish."
