My early hours with The Ascent were a bit of a rollercoaster. Half the time I was staring slack jawed at its gorgeous world and enjoying its unique and satisfying combination of cover-based combat and twin-stick shooting. Other times, I wished I had someone to ask, what are the best cyberware augmentations and what the hell are these yellow cylinders that keep popping out of vending machines? And that’s where this video comes in. To help you get the most out of your time with the game - especially early on, I’ve wrangled a list of everything I wish I’d known had before I got started. So with that out of the way, here are 10 essential tips for The Ascent.

1) Don’t worry, you can change your appearance.
The first thing you’ll do in The Ascent is customize your character, but unlike another Cyberpunk themed RPG, this one lets you change your appearance after the fact. Just visit a Grafter. They’re the vendors marked on your map by the DNA helix icon. They not only sell cyberware augmentations that give you awesome new combat abilities, they also have an option to go in for surgery. Here you can change any part of your appearance, even your gender. So yea, don’t worry if you end up not liking the way you look.

2) Avoid Side Quests At First
Don’t get me wrong, I liked a lot of the side quests in the Ascent, but one mistake I made early on was going after all the side quests as soon as they became available instead of following the main questline. It’s just how I typically tackle big open-world maps. This not only took a lot of time, but it delayed my discovery of some pretty crucial gameplay mechanics. For example, after the third mission, you gain the ability to fast travel from any point on the map by calling a cab. Granted, this costs money, but it’s still nice given the sprawling nature of the game’s maps. Another element that opens up after a while are modules, which are an additional type of cyberware augmentation that embue your character with really helpful passive abilities like increased max HP, more effective healing, and and improved dodge maneuver. Anyhow, I’d recommend sticking to the main path at the start. Once you’ve got a grasp on all the game’s core mechanics, which shouldn’t take too long, then have at it.

3) Use the Navigation Trial (When it Works)
The areas you’ll explore in the Ascent are huge. They’re also quite vertical, filled with multiple levels. staircases, and elevators. This can make finding your way pretty confusing. But the game does offer a very handy navigation trail. Just press up on the D-Pad, at least on Xbox, and the path to your current destination will be illuminated. You’ll also see the distance to your current objective. Now, if you’ve played the game, I know what you’re saying - the tutorial mission points this out. That’s true, but with everything else the game throws at you early on, I quickly forgot about this handy mechanic and I can’t imagine I’m the only one. But, there is a downside. Well, multiple downsides. First, you can’t set custom waypoints in The Ascent, at least not that I found, so the trail is limited to guiding you to your next mission objective. You can’t have it guide you to, say, a fast travel location or a shop. Second, at the time I’m recording this video, the navigation trail, while handy, didn’t work perfectly all the time. In fact, at times it was downright broken. In one instance, I was guided to an empty room away from my actual objective and in another, the trail guided me to an entirely wrong district. Thankfully, my correct destination was either marked correctly on the world map, noted in the quest description, or my objective was correctly marked on my selection of destinations when I fast traveled. I really hope this gets fixed in a day-one patch because this is by far and away my biggest complaint about The Ascent. Anyhow, moving on.
