DeathSmiles with Casper 1CC
This is another casual, survival based (as opposed to scoring) playthrough of DeathSmiles.
Burning Halloween Town Level 3 0:14
Fury of the Gravekeepers Level 3 2:50
Disturbance at the Lakeside Village Level 3 5:35
The Beast Awakens Level 3 8:18
Forest of the Lost Level 2 12:22
The Witch of the Bottomless Swamp Level 2 14:25
Hades Castle 17:36
Since I play for survival with a secondary focus on scoring, my strategies are as follows - play Burning Halloween Town and Fury of the Gravekeepers on Level 3, then play Disturbance at the Lakeside Village at Level 3. Take a death in The Beast Awakens so I can grab the Life Up from the Cyclops and replenish my bombs. Next I play Forest of the Lost at Level 2 so I don't spawn suicide bullets when I kill enemies. Then I take another death in The Witch of the Bottomless Swamp so I can get another Life Up from the wrecked car and replenish my bombs again. I always try to kill Jitterbug without bombing, because if you do, you'll get a full cake that restores two lives, making it important to my strategy.
When I take a death, I mean I lose a full block of life so that when I grab the Life Up, I get half a life back, thereby giving me back three bombs for my life. Just have to be careful about bumping into enemies, because you lose half a block of life for that as opposed to one full block from getting hit by a bullet.
You can see that the hitbox on the girls is the heart in the middle of their body, and not even the full heart - it's actually smaller than the graphic.
This was the first CAVE game that I ever played. I knew of their reputation from the internet, and when I saw DeathSmiles for the XBox 360 in GameStop in 2010, I bought it immediately. It's my favorite CAVE game overall.
I also live about two miles from the Galloping Ghost Arcade in Illinois, so I can play this game in the arcade, and have, a few times. Good times, good times.
This recording is from one of my replays. I played on my laptop from the Steam version of DeathSmiles I&II. I don't much like playing shmups on my regular TV because I sit too close to it and it's hard to see the whole screen, especially when it gets busy with too many bullets and enemies flying around. Much more manageable on my laptop screen, which is considerably smaller.
Also, what's up with people not playing to 1cc this game? When I looked at the Mission Complete Achievement on Steam for beating the game in 1cc, it said that only 5.4% of players had gotten that one as of July 14th, 2022. I don't like credit feeding shmups even when I'm learning - I'll start all the way over when I die out all of my lives and try to play better the next time - but to each their own.
Last, I love the soundtrack for this game. I often make jokes that it's a law of the universe that a shmup has to have a good soundtrack, and this one is no exception with its gothic sounding themes.
