R-Type Final 2 Stage Y3.0 Bottom Path with Cerberus R-Typer
This video is part of a larger set that encompasses the Ship Showcase playlist. This is the twenty seventh video that I recorded.
Ships in this series: Echidna, Cerberus, Hades, Charon
This is the classic ship from R-Type Delta, and traditionally, my least favorite from that game. It's a great ship though. The red laser is a continuous red beam that fires from the front of the Force. The blue laser is a pair of beams that fire from the front of the Force, but bend once to reposition themselves and give it semi homing capability. The yellow laser is a godly beam that starts at the bottom of the Force and wipes its way up to the top of the screen, not just good against popcorn enemies, but great against larger enemies as well if you get close to them when it starts to fire. The Force has a chain attached to it that damages enemies that fly through it, and the Force itself will claw onto its target and not let go. It doesn't shoot when detached though. The Bits are just standard Round Bits. The Photon Missile has minimal homing capability and causes a small AoE when it hits its target. The Wave Cannon is a lightning blast that homes in on targets, making it VERY useful.
I've read that this stage is from R-Type Tactics II, but as I've never played that game, I can't comment on it. I saw that you fight against R-Types in this stage, so my original plan was to use a Bydo ship, but I was having a really difficult time with it. This stage is rock hard because of that tunnel that leads down with all of the weak ships that are flying up out of it. I could make it through that tunnel sometimes with Sexy Dynamite's yellow weapon, but the boss would always kill me before I could finish it. Later I thought, the Cerberus became a Bydo ship, why not use that? So I did, and it worked fantastically. My tactic for getting through the downward tunnel was to bzzt bzzt bzzt with the Lightning Wave Cannon and having the yellow laser occasionally clear the screen for me.
There are three paths through this stage. The upper path starts with transformer R-Types and lethal ceiling - I couldn't get past the beginning here, so I skipped it. The middle has a downward leading tunnel with a bunch of R9s that circle around you in tight quarters that I couldn't get through, so I skipped that too. The bottom path was by far the most manageable, so I chose that one. I had to practice this stage a ton, but I eventually got it a few times.
Originally I played stage X5.0 with the Cerberus, but I was so dead set on doing Y3.0 that I ended up changing my recordings around. I'm glad I did, because I'm happy to have gotten this stage.
Personal note - I work the PM shift, and while I was at work the day I recorded this, I could not stop thinking and strategizing about this stage. When I got off that night, I played and got it on the first try after days of practicing. I love when that happens.
