Decap Attack Game Sample - Genesis/MD
Decap Attack has a somewhat interesting history and there are a few things till this day that some folks may have not heard about it. On the surface, Decap Attack is a slightly above average action platformer published by Sega and developed by Vic Tokai, but there's more than meets the eye here. For starters, did you folks know this game was a retooled version of the Japanese game "Magical Hat Flying Turbo Adventure" (or "Magical Hat no Buttobi Tabo! Daibouken") which was based on an anime (which could not be gained outside Japan, which is why the changes were made) and is a spiritual successor to both Sega Master System's Psycho Fox and NES' Kid Kool? Yeah, it's pretty strange, but there's more to talk about.
In the US/EU version of the game, you control a mummy known as Chuck D. Head, who, by the orders of his creator Dr. Frank N. Stein, is sent to defeat Max D. Cap and his underworld army of goons who are trying to rule Body Island. The game is a bit unconventional due to its theme (being a "horror" themed platformer) but largely conventional in every other way, though this isn't a bad thing. Chuck D. Head, contrary to his name, does not exactly have a head, or rather, it's not where his head should be. Chuck can attack enemies with his face, located around his chest, jump on enemies, and use a variety of potions he finds to help him on his quest. He can also find a head on levels which he can use to attack enemies like a boomerang.
There are quite a few short stages to tackle, and there are some objectives like finding particular items within a level, but it's pretty simple throughout. The game features pretty simple visuals but a pretty rocking soundtrack. Want some other little-known trivia? There was a comic based somewhat on Decap Attack and dealt with the characters Chuck Head, Dr. Frank N Stein, Igor, and Max D. Cap. Additionally, Vic Tokai was quite fond of MFHTA/DA and would re-use a ditty or two when they later developed the little-known Gen/MD SHMUP, Trouble Shooter (known as Battle Mania in Japan). For example, the stage clear theme in Decap Attack is the same as the "Prepare For More Trouble!!" tune in Trouble Shooter. I am such a geek, lol. Kewl.
This is a video going through the first world in Decap Attack. Enjoy.
