The Chinese Linux distribution deepin based on Debian 10.10 (“Buster”) , formerly also “deepin Linux”, is gaining more and more supporters with its in-house desktop environment, the deepin Desktop Environment (DDE), even outside of China. Version 20.2.3 comes with new software and the latest LTS kernel.
Similar to the beginner-friendly and also very popular Elementary OS 6.0 , deepin largely dispenses with well-known and established applications and relies largely on uniform developer tools in favor of consistency, compact builds and speed.
Refurbished desktop and two new kernels
The highly customizable desktop environment has been developed in-house since 2013 and was originally based on the HTML engine WebKit and the HTML5 standard .
But in 2015 the developers finally ported the in-house desktop environment to the new cross-platform GUI toolkit Qt 5 for version 2.0 .
The operating system comes with in-house apps, the number of which is now more than 30. The deepin Brwoser and deepin Mail, the deepin System Monitor and the deepin Terminal as well as deepin Movie based on FFmpeg , to name just a few.
A lot has happened with deepin 20 and the subsequent updates, especially visually, and the entire system shines in a uniform "unified" design, which extends consistently to all areas and the entire operating system .
The official release notes list various bug fixes and optimizations, especially on the desktop.
Optimized: application icons
Fixed: in the extend mode for dual displays, after dragging a window to half of the secondary screen and releasing it, the dragging cannot be continued
Fixed: windows have been dragged continuously even after the mouse button was released
Fixed: when a part of the window was out of the screen, after switching on or off the window effect by shortcuts, the position of the window changed
Fixed: after opening multiple applications, using Alt + Tab to switch to the desktop, pressing Alt + Tab again to switch applications, clicking on the blank space, it did not restore to the initial state
Fixed: the shortcuts "Super + Shift + number" still worked when there were no window thumbnails in the multitasking view.
Fixed: in the multitasking view, the shortcuts "Super + Shift + number" did not take effect when a window thumbnail was selected.
Fixed: the conflict between deep-in-icon-theme and the browser.
Fixed: the abnormal display of the notification center panel.
Fixed: the login interface was locked for 3 minutes due to wrong passwords, but after that, the fingerprint cannot be used to unlock it.
Fixed: when a wrong fingerprint or wrong password was entered to log into an unlogged account, the error prompts were shown for another unlogged account.
deepin 20.2.3 - Release Notes
But the developers have also made some changes under the hood and with Linux 5.10.50 LTS, the latest LTS kernel supported until December 2026, and Linux 5.12.18, two new system cores on board. With the latest version 20.2.3, deepin also changes to Debian 10.10 (“Buster”) and its repositories. The new Debian 11 ("Bullseye") is to serve as the basis from 2022.
In addition to the new and particularly stable basis, deepin also receives automatic text recognition using Optical Character Recognition ( OCR ). The new feature makes it possible to recognize texts in images and then to copy them.
