The upcoming MAME 0.244 release (end of May 2022) has a number of important ZX Spectrum fixes from 'holub' These allow for 'multicolour' effects to work properly. This is a trick whereby the attribute table is changed per-scanline, giving 2 colours in every 8x1 pixel area rather than every 8x8, and allows for some nice vertical scrolling without colour clash for example. The video shows both the 128k and 48k versions of Old Tower to demonstrate this. Some older games were also fixed, for example, Duet no longer hangs on the title screen, which is probably related as it's doing a rainbow type effect on the text.
