I have not been entirely satisfied with my composite captures to date. Here are some conclusions I have drawn.

1. Between my I-O Data GV-USB2 and my StarTech USB3HDCAP, I should always use the GV-USB2 to capture composite and S-Video. The USB3HDCAP likes to drop frames in a way that messes with the flicker regardless of what I do. The GV-USB2 does not.

2. When capturing for YouTube, I now capture everything in 1080p, scaling the image to that resolution and adding borders to get a 1920x1080 picture. I have decided to capture everything from consoles, including borders and that gray line you see in Contra on the left side of the screen.

3. When capturing using OBS, I set my resolution to 720x480, FPS to 30 and disable all filters. Buffering is enabled for smoother scrolling. AviSynth's SeparateFrames function will restore the 60fps.

The gamma curve of a CRT is difficult to replicate with a capture device. I had to boost the brightness to get the tree trunks on top the screen to appear closer to as they should with a CRT. Compare this to my playthrough here :

With this method, one must keep watch that audio sync does not drift from video sync. I would suggest starting the recording before turning the console on, then editing out the blue screen bit.
