【Depth Dwellers - DOS Abandonware】 Squiggy's Abandonware Adventures (Free DOS Games)
Hey friends, today's abandonware title is Depth Dwellers -- something I'd throw into the category of an early DOOM-like. I don't know if DOOM-like is a real category, but that's what I'm gonna call it.
It's one of those first-gen PC 3D shooter type games. I think they use something called a raycasting engine? That might be wrong. I could easily go look it up and provide my viewers with valuable information about this game, but I don't know. I'm just gonna guess, I guess.
I always kind of liked this type of game, and I definitely want to try out more of them. This one I had a lot of fun playing for the video, but, looking back, I think I can do better. It was fun to play because I've never played a game like this on the channel before, and it's been so long since I've played an early 3D DOOM-like of any type.
However, it was kind of bland overall. Big confusing generic areas, like one type of enemy over and over and over, guns that didn't feel great... stuff like that. A lot of this is due to the age and time it came out I'm sure, and I'm not trying to knock it and say it's bad because I did have fun playing it, I just think there's probably better games in this genre than Depth Dwellers.
So yeah, we will return to this style of raycaster(?) 3DOOM-earlylike game in the future, just not this one in particular. Hope you enjoyed watching my friends! :)
---[ Wikipedia ]---------------
Depth Dwellers, released in 1994, is a video game released by TriSoft for DOS computers.
The player is assigned to journey into the Zendle mines to accomplish what his beloved Princess Aurora could not: to rescue the Depth Dwelling men of Ora from the Ri of Riase.
The object of the game is for the player to make to the exit teleporter in every level. Throughout each level, the player can destroy robotic enemies, free slaves, find secrets and collect treasure for bonus points. Wherever there is a locked door, the player is required to find one of two keys to unlock it. The player makes use of only firearms and if exhausted of ammo, cannot attack. Secrets can be found by touching a wall that is different in appearance.
---[ Series Information ]---------------
Squiggy's Abandonware Adventures is a series where I play through Abandonware games. Abandonware games are games so old that their copyright is no longer being enforced, usually because the original company distributing the game no longer exists. As such, they are in a legal gray area where they aren't quite legal to pirate, but no one is around to protect the original IP. For the most part they are old DOS games, but they may be from other older systems such as the Commodore 64.
