Descent II Vertigo, Level 20, insane difficulty, cold start, no death, full rescue, 109HP at exit
Difficulty rating: 5 (extremely hard)
Whoaaa! This level is EXTREMELY HARD on cold start.
Anyway what else should I expect from a final level? I needed at least 300 attempt to clear this one. Making it probably the second hardest after D1 Level11.
No, not the boss what is the difficult, but most difficult part is getting the blue key.
Those omega spawns are a nuisance putting smart mines everywhere. Many deaths resulted from running into smart mines they put besides you.
The sticky corners glitch making harder to dodge homing plasma blobs and missiles. Many death result from this. So try to stay away from the walls.
The biggest problems are two spiders and boarsheads camping behind the lavafall. You cannot see them from the lava fall, but they can perfectly see you and fire at you. They often flank you through the grates without warning or attack from behind.
You'll need at least 10-20 attempts to get though. But if you practice enough maybe 4-5 attempts should be enough.
After you got the blue key make sure not to trigger the matcens, they spit boarsheads and spider which spam the area with spawns. The trigger is moving out from the segment in front of the matcens.
The blue room can be practiced.
I can show you a trick there. To get the earthshaker behind the cloaking device you'll need to hit a trigger which is behind a curved corridor, behind a grate, behind the dense lavafall. If you go in to the grate you are soaked by the lavafall so you cannot steer the guided missile. So to get it I probed the grate by firing the lasers at it. If you hear considerable delay between the two hits you can know you fired it through the grate so you are ready to fire the guided missile.
After getting the red key, both matcens activate, that's the second toughest sitation on this level. Use you megas and smarts to get rid of all the mechs.
The next challenge is getting the 2 earthshakers in the boss room... That's almost the toughest puzzle to solve in the entire game. First you need to hit a trigger behind the lava fall in the corridor at the bottom. The steer another guided missile through the grate to open the secret door from inside so you can rush in the 2 shakers.
For the boss fight, you'll need all the 5 shakers you can find in this level, and you need to go for direct ass hits. If you aim well 4 shakers finish the boss.
This boss is harder then the alien boss at the puuma sphere, becuase it's more symmetric. you can easily hit it from the front if you don't watch carefully enough.
To sum up there were many times I felt a little heart attack:
4:40 Realizing I forgot to pick up the shaker from the lava dome. I believed that the matcens will activate if I go back. Then I found out the trigger is in front of the blue door, which I haven't crossed yet.
14:00 The last guided missile... If I had screwed it up here, I would have been lost.
14:40 Stopped here to take some deep breath, while saying "don't screw it up" three times to myself. The concentration worked and 4 shakers blew the guy into smithereens.
==============
Kind of epilogue:
So I think I finished my challenge here.
It's all started by managing doing a very a good run on Descent I Level 6.
Basically I spent 8 months worth of my free time to play all the 74 official levels of Descent I and Descent II on insane, while rescuing all hostages and leaving the mine with a ship which is in better condition than it was at the start.
