DFFOO [JP] Chad WoL shield does not care about Bahamut's 100K crystal self-destruction
Sometimes Auron/Galuf alone is not enough to stop your whole team from getting blown away by massive self destruction. In those time of dire need, the OG hero is here to help.
Tbf WoL LDCA alone is already very good in most cases in terms of cost/convenience and protection, but if the battle in question has recurring hazards that can one shot your entire team, sometimes putting someone like WoL or Basch in allows you to just ignore any potential danger. There may not be a lot of these occurrences but they do exist at least.
I would say if you don't have his LDCA to use on GL, consider grabbing up to his LD now as it is one of the CAs that is a very practical one that you can use throughout the era.
Sometimes they are not mutually exclusive either. You can sub in Auron in place of Yang here and it will still work similarly.
If you use Auron alone in this stage, he may die easily due to the continuous assault by all 3 targets that are under the influence of BRV gain and min BRV floor at the same time. Having WoL shield on him means the shield on Auron takes extra less BRV dmg while Auron takes no HP dmg. At the same time every one is shielded from the AOE blast from self destruct x2.
Obviously some of them just have less compatibility with others. Any one that needs active dodging or getting hit without a lock on themselves would not be good partners with WoL.
WoL is also more party support oriented than most tanks even without BT. He and Garnet made Yang hit pretty close to full HP dmg on both HP dumps on his follow-up on 3 targets. You don't see very often a non-synergy party (barring Garnet who is in this case) having around 70K mBRV.
One thing that has more recent relevance is that due to the recent 30% BRV gain/refund cap imposed by Shinryu, I think rather getting multiple sources of BRV gain is better than having one gigantic BRV refund source. WoL's party shield BRV gain is rather unique, thus should not be clashing with other more generic sources.
Imho the Bahamut fight just before WoL's FR debut is a better show floor for utilizing his shield more than his IW, as it actually is lethal to the entire party. To quickly recap, the dragon star crystals gets 100K worth of BRV gain before being instructed to self destruct and destroy your entire party when Bahamut hits certain HP thresholds if the crystals are above 50% HP. Getting overboard with AOE off-turn dmg within FT may lead to such devastation while it is not your intention.
Specifically with regards to this run, the Cait Sith LDCA was kind of a mistake because I forgot he still had 2 turns to go and it immediately fell off. The party buff was still on and Yang's output didn't change much so it was all good.
