DFFOO [JP] Y'shtola Stalling Strat for stacks and Kain with high/instant turn rate moves with Vayne
There are definitely faster ways to do this fight, but it is fun to play around with the idea of stalling while not killing your turn count.
I did not go overboard for full instant turn rate medica II stall this time. All of her skills have some kind of turn rate shenanigans so she is really good for stalling things if you can keep the orb alive somehow. I hold on to Misery stacks only for a bit before I dump them in this run, but you can keep on stalling if you want to. While there is not an infinite amount of medica II, using it still charges Pulse of Life and using Pulse of Life refills one use of stone and medica II, so you can continue stalling lol.
Y'shtola with Vayne:
Y'shtola has always been a fairly good partner for Vayne. Her rebreaks from LD triggers Vayne's BT follow-up, provides BRV gain for Vayne's dmg refund and dmg buffs. He is still Lv.80 so that dmg refund in between his dumps is actually really vital to his output.
Now that Y'shtola has higher capabilities to stall with medica II, another way of playing her with Vayne would be to stall until the enemy recover from breaks, then you can trigger additional BT follow-ups freely. Using medica II for batterying Vayne also becomes more of a beneficial move as opposed to be sometimes a detrimental one before because of the instant turn rate and stronger battery that actually matters.
Vayne is one of the few BT+ characters that has layers of buffs for the entire party despite being a DPS himself. So I ran him quite often with Y'shtola back in the Lv80 Lufenia+ era since Y'shtola alone did not provide enough buffs if you are not going the full BRV gain route with your character choices. Now that she is Lv.90, there is much less dependence on others than before.
Y'shtola with Kain:
Kain is still Lv.80. His LD follow-up is nice but he tends to have a problem of not having enough overflow and dealing split dmg to targets. Y'shtola's generic buff and Vayne's aura actually gives quite a bit of mBRV to Kain and you can see her C88 with stolen overflow up helped Kain pushed his already overflowing holding BRV up further, so he can deal dmg to 2 targets closer to his own cap with HP dmg up buffs and HP dmg taken up debuffs.
Stalling for off-turn dmg partners to have Ifrit's buff after summon:
Y'shtola's stalling turn rate moves and Vayne's continuous turns can abuse Kain's follow-up for a long time. One other strat I specifically employed in this run is to let Kain come down and take the Ifrit buff. Then send him off carrying the buff after receiving some battery so he can finally reach his max HP dmg cap when Y'shtola burst after the summon phase. The same was done to Vayne, as he exited the phase with 1 turn of Ifrit buff left, so he deals more dmg with his BT follow-up.
This detail is more important to Kain as he does not consume his BRV held while he is in the air. He also dump the same amount of BRV as HP dmg when a launch happens, which is all 7 turns of Y'shtola's BT phase.
So effectively the Ifrit buff affects Kain's dmg twice inside Y'sh BT.
Slight problem putting Kain with Vayne:
Normally with Vayne's continuous attacks Kain would benefit a lot from having Vayne on board, but not vice versa. Kain's follow-up breaking the enemy does not trigger Vayne's BT-follow-up, and it happens after the on-turn attack. So when the enemy just recovers after anyone's on-turn attack, Kain's follow-up would keep preventing anyone breaking the enemy normally. That's why Y'shtola's rebreak is even more important than usual.
Pity that Kain works against Vayne in this manner.
Vayne is still totally relevant and usable, it is just that he needs more support like other Lv.80s. There are quite a few Lv.90 rebreakers and stallers like Zell, Noctis, Papalymo and Tidus and soon Zidane will rejoin the fray as well. It would be interesting to see the results with said characters while he slowly goes on to get his own C90.
Meanwhile, there are a few more extra strats that you can play around with Y'shtola and it has been really fun to explore such avenues, with the obvious ones being insane BRV gain up and stalling. I can see them having potential to become meme strats (like medical II with Exdeath lol) but there is always a more practical and serious side to them.
