Let me start by saying that I don't think that Diablo 2 is a bad game. With that said I don't think it's a good game either. It's kind of hard to look at a game though eyes of the past. I am sure that when this game released in 2000 it was freaking awesome. That being said this game sure does show some signs of age. There are some things to appreciate in this game. Like when you die the world doesn't change so items are still there and the enemies that killed you keep the health they had, that includes bosses. Which feels like a double edged sword. What's the punishment for death. yes you drop your equipment and money, but all I really lose is time. The game is crazy forgiving. The remake looks freaking fantastic. The old graphics are certainly outdated at this point, they aren't awful but the redone environments really do shine. The music feels odd at times and doesn't quite fit in the beginning areas, but it did get better and there is some solid atmosphere. I played with a controller and it felt like just about any other action RPG. The key bindings make sense and are intuitive and simple. Now on to what made the game not so great. The gameplay loop is not my jam. It's so repetitive. In lots of games there are strategies to how you approach enemies. In this game you walk up to every mob the same and just repeat your 2 or 3 actions until you win. It's not very exciting. You also don't get access to all that many abilities. Each level you get 1 ability point that means that you don't have access for a very long time to multiple abilities and even then you have to choose a very specific focus. You don't want to spread yourself too thin or you cannot do damage. it got boring really fast. To add to that, there is a ton of loot that drops. That's th big gimmick, but you have like 2 inventory slots to pick things up. This is not how to design looter games. The lack of inventory space is infuriating. When I see loot I want to pick it up. I want to hoard. I get that this is not what Diablo is about, but it's so damn rude. I just want all of the stuff on the ground. This made my playthrough probably unnecessary slow because I would constantly return to town and sell dropped loot. Is it too much to ask for and endless bag? My stash also filled up pretty quick. The one thing I hate in games is inventory management. It slows the pace of the game to a halt while I deal with an issue that should never be an issue. I just want to run around, kill things and pick their garbage up and not have to worry about what's important and what's not. a Lot of people said the game gets better in NG+, but if I need to slog through the base game before the game gets going is the game really all that good to begin with? The thrill is finding gear you can upgrade with certain runes, but it's hardly applicable in the base game and NG+ is just retreading the same things you've already done, just a bit bigger. The draw just isn't here for me. This isn't my addiction. I see why people enjoy this I really do. Destiny did this to me. For some reason this just didn't catch on with me. I found the loop boring and tedious. Maybe my character build just wasn't fun. It's cool being a druid and transforming into an unkillable werewolf. I slaughtered everything pretty easily. It was fun for bits and pieces, but on a whole it felt very tedious and outdated. Enjoy my blind playthrough.
