I would argue that by the late 2000's gaming had reached it's peak. Up to that point innovation had been constant and consistent from one generation to another.

Now it is harder than ever to tell the difference between generations. But that's not a bad thing. It means many 360 and PS3 games have aged quite well.

Don't take this as a reason to be discouraged about gaming's future, use it as a reason to be excited about the old games you can go back and discover for the first time.
