The chainsaw wasn’t always running. It turns out that they actually pumped tobacco smoke through a tube that they slid up his pants leg, through his shirt, and into the chainsaw to make it appear as it’s on. Originally, Ash wasn’t going to be in medieval times until the second half of the film. He was also going to lose an eye. More of Ash’s personal life was supposed to be included, but Raimi only wrote the script like this because he didn’t think Universal would fund a sequel to a low-budget film unless it could standalone as a partial remake. When they got the greenlight for an Evil Dead sequel, they decided to scrap this idea, and left the cabin in the woods in the old version of the script.
